Massive Downsizing at Epic Games: Over 1000 Employees Laid Off
Epic Games, a giant in the gaming industry, sent a shockwave through its workforce today with a note announcing a series of major cuts. According to the internal memo shared by CEO Tim Sweeney, over 1000 employees are being laid off.
Decline in Fortnite Engagement and Economic Struggles
Sweeney noted that the primary reason behind this difficult decision is the decline in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025. With spending significantly exceeding income, the CEO emphasized that major cuts were necessary to keep the company funded and financially stable. In addition to the layoffs, Epic is targeting over $500 million in cost savings across marketing, contracting, and closing open roles.
Industry-Wide and Company-Specific Challenges
Epic Games is facing a combination of industry-wide pressures—such as slower growth, weaker consumer spending, and underperforming next-gen console sales—alongside its own unique challenges. Sweeney highlighted several key areas:
- Fortnite Magic: Difficulty in consistently delivering the “Fortnite magic” with every season.
- Mobile Transition: The early stages of returning to mobile and optimizing the game for billions of smartphones.
- Industry Vanguard: The “bullets” taken as the industry’s vanguard, a battle that is only in its early days of paying off.
No Relation to AI
Unlike many recent tech layoffs, Sweeney explicitly stated that these cuts are not related to artificial intelligence. He noted that the company still aims to have as many talented developers as possible to create great content and technology, provided it remains economically viable.
Roadmap: Unreal Engine 6 and Future Launches
The path forward for Epic Games is clear. While continuing to build fresh seasonal content and live events for Fortnite, the company is accelerating the evolution of its developer tools, transitioning from Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN to Unreal Engine 6. Huge launch plans for \“the next generation of Epic\” are set for the end of the year.
Support for Impacted Employees
Talented professionals affected by the layoffs will receive a severance package including at least four months of base pay, with more based on tenure. Epic is also extending healthcare coverage—for instance, 6 months of paid coverage in the U.S.—and accelerating stock option vesting through January 2027.
Epic Games has survived massive industry upheavals before, from the 2D to 3D move in the 90s to the shift to online gaming in 2012. Sweeney remains confident that the company will emerge from these \“extreme\” market conditions as a winner, building an open and vibrant future for entertainment alongside other developers.
