Ubisoft has announced the cancellation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, which was announced in 2020 and has faced multiple delays since. The company stated that the game could not reach the quality level that fans deserved.
The statement from the official Prince of Persia account read: “While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit.”
Major Restructuring at Ubisoft
The cancellation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is part of a major organizational change announced by Ubisoft today. The company revealed it has discontinued development of 6 games in total. These include Prince of Persia along with 4 unannounced titles and a mobile game.
Ubisoft is adopting a new operational model with 5 separate “Creative Houses.” Each Creative House will focus on specific game genres and brands:
- Vantage Studios: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six
- Creative House 2: The Division, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell
- Creative House 3: For Honor, The Crew, Riders Republic, Skull & Bones
- Creative House 4: Anno, Might & Magic, Rayman, Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil
- Creative House 5: Just Dance, Hungry Shark, Uno
Accelerating Cost Reductions
The company announced it is accelerating its cost reduction program with a target of €500 million in total savings by 2028. As part of this, the Halifax mobile studio and Stockholm studio are being closed, while restructuring is underway at Abu Dhabi, RedLynx, and Massive studios.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated: “The AAA industry has become persistently more selective and competitive. Today we are announcing a major reset built to create the conditions for a return to sustainable growth.”
While this development is a major disappointment for the Prince of Persia franchise, Ubisoft emphasized it has not abandoned the series. The brand will continue to be developed under the new Creative House 4 structure.
