Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has issued a stark warning against new legal regulations spreading worldwide that demand ID or biometric data from users to access social media and digital services.
Sweeney argued that these laws, which he claims are driven by Meta lobbyists, create a massive privacy violation and will turn the digital world into a dangerous surveillance hub.
Here are the key takeaways from Sweeney’s statements:
“Data Will Not Be Safe”
Sweeney stated that forcing citizens to upload personal identification documents to tens of thousands of different companies just to access platforms fundamentally about “free speech” is likely unconstitutional. He countered advocates’ claims that “data won’t be stored or leaked” by reminding them of the following realities:
- Developer Errors: Security mistakes made by amateur developers who fail to meet expected safety standards.
- Customer Support Risks: When automated systems fail and users email their documents to support agents, those files are stored on additional servers (citing the past example of hacked Discord contractor servers).
- Dodgy Corporations: Shady companies whose lawyers find clever legal loopholes to repurpose or broker user data for a profit.
- Legal Obligations: The necessity of retaining sensitive documents on systems for long periods due to lawsuits and regulatory investigations.
The Alternative Solution: Device-Level Parental Controls
Stating that there is a much more logical solution instead of this vast power grab by governments and giant corporations, the Epic Games CEO emphasized that the answer lies in parental controls. He reminded the public that tech giants like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and Epic Games already offer parents the ability to manage their children’s device accounts and make decisions about what features they can access.
Apple’s Loss of Trust and the “Boy Who Cried Wolf” Situation
One of the most striking parts of the statement was the section containing both praise and criticism for Apple. Sweeney noted that the best and most good-faith parental control solution in this area actually belongs to Apple, but politicians are ignoring it.
He attributed this to a tragedy of their own making: Apple has lost public trust by constantly “crying wolf” with pretextual safety and security claims designed solely to protect their own App Store monopoly.
What Does the Future Hold?
According to Sweeney, the campaign by Meta lobbyists will likely succeed in many countries, resulting in the digital world becoming a much more corporatized, government-controlled, and surveilled place.
