Another Game Bites the Dust: Spectre Divide Shuts Down!

Mountaintop Shuts Down: Spectre Divide Servers to Close Within 30 Days

Indie game studio Mountaintop has announced the end of the road for Spectre Divide, its tactical shooter released last year. In a statement, CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed that the game’s first season failed to meet expectations, leading to the studio’s closure.

400,000 Players Couldn’t Generate Expected Revenue

Mountaintop had hoped for a strong start with Spectre Divide Season 1: Flashpoint. The game attracted 400,000 players in its first week and surpassed 10,000 concurrent players across all platforms. However, a steep drop in active players and insufficient revenue ultimately made the game unsustainable.

Mitchell revealed that the studio explored all options, including securing investors, partnering with a publisher, or pursuing acquisition deals, but none succeeded. He also cited broader challenges in the gaming industry as a contributing factor.

Spectre Divide to Go Offline in 30 Days

With Mountaintop now financially unable to continue, the CEO announced that the studio will formally close this week. Spectre Divide will be fully shut down within the next 30 days. To minimize player impact, refunds will be issued for purchases made since the season’s launch, and new purchases will be disabled shortly.

“This Was Always a Risky Project”

Mitchell emphasized that Spectre Divide was developed by a small indie team aiming to break genre conventions. Despite technical issues at its September 2024 launch, the studio delivered major improvements with Season 1, including a console version and player-driven updates. However, these changes couldn’t secure commercial success.

In closing, Mitchell thanked the Spectre community and investors, calling the game a passion project and stating the team “has no regrets about trying.”

What Was Spectre Divide?

Spectre Divide stood out as a 3v3 tactical shooter with an innovative dual-body control mechanic, allowing players to command two characters simultaneously. It blended strategic depth with a distinct art style, aiming to redefine the genre.

Sadly, the indie studio’s bold experiment couldn’t withstand the market’s pressures. While praised for its creativity, Spectre Divide joins the growing list of passion projects halted by the harsh realities of the gaming industry.
