Tomb Raider Returns: Major Announcement Confirmed for The Game Awards
Geoff Keighley, the producer and host of The Game Awards, has confirmed that a major announcement regarding the future of the Tomb Raider franchise is scheduled for this week’s ceremony.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Keighley teased the upcoming reveal: “Lara Croft returns at #TheGameAwards! Tune in Thursday night for a look at the future of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises. This is one you won’t want to miss.”
Game Reveal or TV Series?
While the excitement is palpable, the specific nature of the announcement remains slightly ambiguous. It is currently unclear whether the reveal refers to the next mainline Tomb Raider video game or potentially the upcoming live-action series currently in development for Amazon Prime Video.
However, if it is indeed a game reveal, expectations are high for the next major entry from Crystal Dynamics. The studio, which stewards the modern franchise, confirmed back in 2022 that development had begun on a new Tomb Raider title built using Unreal Engine 5.
Turbulent Times at the Studio
The road to this reveal has been rocky for the developers. Crystal Dynamics has faced four separate rounds of layoffs over the past two years. Regarding the most recent staff cuts last month, the studio stated that the decision was part of a restructuring effort designed to “optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game” and shape the studio for future projects.
Despite the restructuring, the studio has emphasized its commitment to providing full support to affected employees during the transition.
