Following the massive success of the Project Hail Mary film, the adventure is now expanding to a new frontier. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, a brand-new mixed reality (mixed reality/VR) game, has been officially announced.
The most exciting aspect of the project is that it features a story written by the book’s author, Andy Weir, himself. Weir has crafted a completely new and original chapter specifically for the game, offering a pivotal, untold moment in the Hail Mary mission that hasn’t been seen in the book or the movie.
A Step Beyond the Book and Movie
Speaking about the announcement, Andy Weir commented:
Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more. This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie, something you can only experience in mixed reality.
In the game, players step into the role of Ryland Grace during a critical, previously unrevealed moment of the mission. The ship’s systems are failing, and the uncertainty of deep space is closing in. Using mixed reality, the Hail Mary ship itself bleeds into the player’s physical environment, allowing them to diagnose problems, improvise fixes, and push the limits of science under pressure.
Building a Real Bond with Rocky
At the heart of the experience is Rocky, the beloved alien intelligence whose partnership with Grace defines the emotional core of the story. In Journey Among the Stars, players don’t just watch this bond develop—they build it themselves.
Through cooperation, problem-solving, and evolving trust, players will interact with Rocky in ways that feel tangibly real. The game utilizes mixed reality to make interactions natural; for instance, you can give Rocky a “thumbs up,” and he might respond with his famous “thumbs down” (he’ll get it right one day). You can perform jazz hands, “fist my bump,” and other gestures that Rocky will respond to in real-time.
Development and Release Window
The game is being developed by Maze Theory, the studio behind Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadows. The project is a collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios.
Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars is slated to launch on major mixed reality and VR platforms in late 2026.
The Future of the Franchise
The Project Hail Mary film has performed so well at the global box office that there is already talk of a potential sequel. However, Weir remains “in the driver’s seat” for any future narrative expansions.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Weir mentioned that while he has ideas for sequels, he hasn’t settled on one that is “good enough” yet. He also confirmed that his next upcoming book is not a sequel to any of his previous works, including The Martian.
