Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” First Trailer Released

Following Oppenheimer’s massive success, Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated next project has been revealed. Contrary to expectations of another sci-fi epic, the master filmmaker returns with The Odyssey, a mythological tale adapted from Homer’s legendary poem. Cinema’s most prestigious auteur, Christopher Nolan, has unveiled his new project The Odyssey with its first trailer, following the tremendous success of Oppenheimer. The production, developed through a collaboration between Universal Pictures and Syncopy, promises to transport audiences into the depths of Ancient Greek mythology.

Mythology Over Sci-Fi: An Unexpected Turn

Many cinephiles and critics anticipated Nolan would follow the Interstellar or Tenet trajectory with another mind-bending science fiction opus. Instead, the acclaimed director has pivoted to one of history’s oldest and most significant narratives, interpreting it through his distinctive cinematic lens. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, chronicling a king’s perilous journey home following the Trojan War.

The approximately two-minute inaugural trailer reveals little about the plot’s specifics, yet delivers the tense, grandiose atmosphere synonymous with Nolan’s filmography.

The cast assembles Hollywood’s finest talent, as expected from a Nolan production. Leading the ensemble are Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o, joined by Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

One striking detail from the released footage is the film’s technical foundation. The Odyssey carries the distinction of being “Shot entirely with IMAX film cameras,” signaling a visually unprecedented experience. The trailer’s dark tone, large-scale battle sequences, and maritime voyage segments demonstrate the director’s continued commitment to practical effects.

The film arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026.

The trailer’s overall atmosphere, somber tone, and visual palette strongly evoke Hellblade 2, one of gaming’s most distinctive recent releases. Read our Hellblade 2 review here.
