No Man’s Sky continues its streak of massive, game-changing updates with patch 6.3, titled Xeno Arena. This latest content drop introduces a highly anticipated feature that fundamentally changes how you interact with the universe’s wildlife: turn-based creature battles. Yes, you can now experience full-fledged, Pokemon-style combat with your tamed companions.

Turn-Based Creature Battles

Players can now adopt the wild fauna roaming planetary landscapes and assemble them into customized battle teams. These teams can then fight in simulated combat against creatures owned by other players or alien lifeforms.

Each creature comes equipped with a unique set of battle moves that range from straightforward physical attacks to powerful status effects. A creature’s performance in battle is heavily influenced by its personality, battle traits, species, native climate, and physical characteristics.

Hundreds of Tactical Abilities

Battles are deeply tactical. A creature’s native environment dictates its catalog of abilities. You can deal devastating attacks, heal injuries, stun opponents, or morph them into vulnerable forms. During combat, creatures might even dodge incoming attacks or perform surprise bonus moves and critical hits.

There are 8 distinct elemental affinities to master. For instance, fire-based companions may excel against frozen creatures but could find themselves vulnerable to radioactive attacks, encouraging players to experiment with different synergies.

Morphogenetics & Breeding

Creatures participating in battles will earn experience points, which gradually improve their combat prowess. Veteran battlers have enhanced likelihoods of moving first and dodging incoming attacks.

The update also adds a new interface for modifying the genetics of your combatants. By using retroviral pellets earned from victories, you can upgrade agility, health, and combat traits. Furthermore, you can use the Egg Sequencer aboard the Space Anomaly to modify the offspring of your creatures, creating a legacy of champion battlers.

Multiplayer Holo-Arenas

If you want to test your mettle against real players, you can visit the Space Anomaly and challenge other Travellers at the newly installed Holo-Arena tables. The goal is simple: knock out their entire team to secure the win.

Holo-Arena tables have also been added to planetary outposts, planetary archive buildings, space stations, and certain settlement buildings where you can challenge seasoned alien champions (Gek, Vy’keen, and Korvax).

The Arena League & Oceanus

A new faction has been added to the game’s universe: The Arena League. Achieving excellence in battle will allow you to rise through its ranks, earning 5 new varieties of ranked medals and special titles.

To guide you on this journey, a new NPC named Iteration: Oceanus has made the Space Anomaly their home. Oceanus is a creature-collecting enthusiast who offers daily fixed-seed challenges to all players across the globe, requiring you to discuss strategies with the community to secure daily victories. Impressing Oceanus will reward you with unique, eccentric companions like the Corrupted Quadruped or the Aeron Crab.

Expanded Companion Register and Surveying

To accommodate your growing roster of gladiators, the maximum number of tamed creatures has been significantly increased from 18 to 30.

Hunting for new companions is easier too, thanks to the specialized Creature Survey mode added to the Analysis Visor. This mode not only displays species information but also reveals the potential battle traits of wild animals before you tame them.

Optimizations and Fixes

Alongside the new content, patch 6.3 brings a host of under-the-hood improvements:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 users will see rendering performance improvements of up to 15%.
  • PC players benefit from implemented tiled lighting, significantly improving GPU performance especially at higher resolutions.
  • Significant optimizations for player-built bases with large plant farms and all inventory handling instances.
  • Various bug fixes including UI texture scaling for 4K resolutions and patching a rare issue where crystal-based fauna would turn invisible.

The No Man’s Sky Xeno Arena update is rolling out now, completely free, for all platforms. Time to catch ‘em all across the universe!
