Helldivers 2 Goes Underground with 'Into the Unjust' Update, But Inflates to 140 GB on PC

Helldivers 2’s New Update, ‘Into the Unjust’, Takes the Fight Underground

The latest major update for Helldivers 2 has just dropped, and it’s a big one. Titled “Into the Unjust,” PATCH 01.004.000 introduces subterranean warfare, terrifying new enemies, and a host of crucial balance changes. A new Warbond is also set to follow in two days.

New Features and Missions

The update introduces a brand-new environment: Hive Worlds. These are massive, randomly-generated cave systems where players will confront the Terminid threat in claustrophobic tunnels. The caves are filled with new tactical elements, including acid lakes, advanced bug spires, and destructible walls. While you can call down Stratagems through openings in the ceiling, a flashlight is essential in the oppressive darkness.

New mission objectives include destroying the Spore Lung, a structure responsible for spreading the toxic “Gloom,” and defending the GATER mobile oil rig from relentless swarms.

New Enemies

Four new Terminid variants have been added to the bestiary:

  • Rupture Spewer: Bursts from the ground to spray corrosive acid.
  • Rupture Warrior: A mutated creature that avoids sunlight and prefers to burrow.
  • Rupture Charger: An armored beast that tunnels underground to launch high-speed assaults.
  • Dragonroach: A flying monstrosity that rains down acid from above, a true titan of the skies.

Balancing and Fixes

Alongside the new content, the Into the Unjust update delivers significant balancing and bug fixes. Non-explosive Orbital Stratagems like Orbital Smoke and Orbital E.M.S. have been buffed, while the stun mechanic has been reworked for greater consistency. The patch also addresses numerous crashes, audio bugs, and enemy pathfinding issues.

Key fixes include preventing Automatons from taking damage when deployed from dropships and improving pathing for citizens during city evacuation missions.

The Bloat Problem

For PC players, the update comes with a significant downside: the game’s file size has now ballooned to over 140 GB. This is a stark contrast to the 20-30 GB footprint on PlayStation 5. This growing issue is putting pressure on Arrowhead to address PC optimization. While the studio previously stated that a dedicated optimization patch wasn’t planned, the community backlash is mounting. Many players report that the game’s performance and stability on PC are deteriorating with each new patch, raising concerns about its long-term playability on the platform.
