Major Disappointment from Quantic Dream:
Quantic Dream, known for cinematic single-player games like Detroit Become Human, has announced its new game and the result is a complete fiasco. Spellcasters Chronicles, a 3v3 online game, will be the studio’s first release since 2018. Don’t let 2018 seem recent. We’re talking about exactly 7 years ago.
Having reached over 25 million players with story-driven, distinctive titles like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, and Detroit Become Human, Quantic Dream is now taking a completely different path. Studio head David Cage’s statement, while trying to justify the situation, actually reveals how far off course they’ve strayed.
Cage is right when he says “This new game may surprise our fans as it is very different from what we have done so far.” However, the “taking risks is part of our DNA” defense doesn’t justify completely abandoning the studio’s identity.
This new title may surprise our fans as it is very different from what we have done so far. But taking risks, challenging ourselves, and exploring new ways of playing has always been part of our DNA. Since we have no legacy in this genre, we know we have everything to prove. That’s why your support and feedback will be essential.
The Lost Game: Star Wars Eclipse
While it’s stated that Star Wars Eclipse development continues, no concrete progress has been shown for years. Instead, resources are being allocated to an online service game nobody asked for.
Spellcasters Chronicles: A Generic Online Game
The game takes place in a world controlled by wizards and offers the following features:
Gameplay: Free-to-play, 3v3 team-based third-person action-strategy game. Players summon creature armies and cast spells as wizard commanders.
Mechanics: Aerial combat, hundreds of creature types, tower defense-like structure building, and a “deck-building” system. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Because there are dozens of games in the market with similar features.
Community Voting: Each season, players will make decisions that affect the game’s direction. This “revolutionary” feature is already present in many live service games.
Closed Beta: Even Entry is Difficult
The game’s closed beta will launch on Steam by the end of 2025. However, the system requirements are incredibly high:
- CPU: Intel Core i5-10400 or equivalent
- RAM: 32 GB (yes, you read that correctly)
- GPU: GeForce RTX 3070 or equivalent
The studio says this is because it’s “in development” and requirements will drop at launch, but for now, you need a small fortune in hardware to test the game.
The beta will only be available in Europe and North America. Beta rewards will carry over to the full version, but your progress will be reset.
Quantic Dream’s mastery of storytelling and cinematic experiences held a unique position in the gaming world. Now they’re trying their luck with a generic online game. Cage’s words “we have no legacy in this genre, we have everything to prove” demonstrate the severity of the situation. So why are you risking your 28-year legacy and starting from scratch in a field where you have no experience? Another company caught by the service game plague…
