CD PROJEKT Sells Digital Gaming Platform GOG to Co-Founder Michał Kiciński

Polish gaming giant CD PROJEKT Group has announced the sale of its digital game distribution platform GOG (Good Old Games) to company co-founder and major shareholder Michał Kiciński. The deal, finalized on December 29, 2025, marks GOG’s return to independent operation after years under the CD PROJEKT umbrella.

$25.3 Million Acquisition Deal

According to official reports, the sale of 100% of GOG’s shares was completed for 90.7 million Polish zloty (approximately $25.3 million USD). Prior to the sale, GOG distributed approximately 44.2 million PLN ($12.3 million USD) to CD PROJEKT as dividends from previous years’ profits.

Kiciński financed the acquisition entirely through committed external funding without selling any of his existing CD PROJEKT shares.

Strategic Separation and New Focus

CD PROJEKT stated that this sale aligns with the group’s growth strategy. The company aims to redirect its resources and focus toward its core business: developing and publishing AAA-quality games within universes like The Witcher and Cyberpunk.

CD PROJEKT Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski commented, “GOG has been operating independently for a long time. Now it’s moving into very capable hands—one of its co-founders. Our focus will be entirely on our ambitious development roadmap and new high-quality products.”

GOG Will Maintain DRM-Free Philosophy

Michał Kiciński, one of GOG’s original founders in 2008, emphasized that the platform will remain true to its core values. He affirmed that GOG’s DRM-free structure—which ensures genuine ownership of purchased games—will be preserved.

“In a market flooded with countless low-quality games, timeless classics remain a safe harbor,” Kiciński noted. “GOG will continue focusing on both preserving classics and discovering new games with a retro spirit.”

Collaboration to Continue

While the companies are separating in terms of ownership, their commercial partnership will continue. Following the sale, the parties signed a new distribution agreement. Under this arrangement, current and future games developed by CD PROJEKT RED (including new The Witcher and Cyberpunk projects) will remain available on the GOG platform.

The transaction is expected to close on December 31, 2025, with financials reflected in the fourth quarter of 2025.
