Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by former developers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, has officially revealed the release date, price, and PC system requirements for their debut game, The Blood of Dawnwalker. The highly anticipated RPG will launch on September 3, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
What is The Blood of Dawnwalker About?
The Blood of Dawnwalker is a dark, open-world action RPG set in 14th century Europe. Players take on the role of Coen, a character living in the Carpathian Mountains, a region ravaged by the Black Death. Coen’s village falls under the control of the powerful vampire lord Brencis and his undead lieutenants. Brencis offers protection in exchange for a “blood tax”; the villagers give their blood, and he protects them from outside threats. Those who are weak or insubordinate are made an example of.
The village’s disastrous attempt to free itself from this oppression results in Coen being cursed with vampirism and left for dead, while his family is taken away.
The 30-Day Time Pressure
One of the game’s most striking mechanics is that Coen only has 30 days and nights to save his family. Every major action you take ticks the clock forward. Even some side quests, dialogue choices, and learning specific abilities from the skill tree come with a visible time cost.
Studio CEO and Game Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz stated that this system is not designed to stress players out, but rather to make them feel the pressure of an approaching major event. Creative Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz clarified that running out of time doesn’t lead to an immediate “game over.” There are consequences, but the story continues.
In other words, you can decide to go straight to Brencis at any point; however, if you go unprepared, the challenge will be significantly harder.
Choices and Consequences
With many of the 160+ team members coming from CD Projekt RED, it is no surprise that choices and consequences play a massive role in the game. As shown in the demo, you can take on multiple quests simultaneously or ignore them entirely to focus on other things. However, your choices carry a heavy price; if you ignore an NPC in need, they might face brutal punishment later on.
Coen also has a blood hunger meter. If it drops too low, he is consumed by an insatiable hunger, turning every dialogue option into an unavoidable “give in to the hunger” choice. This mechanic wasn’t planned from the start but emerged organically during the development process.
The Difference Between Day and Night
Coen’s experiences as a human during the day and as a vampire at night are drastically different. Specific NPCs and quests are only available at certain times. The skill tree consists of three main branches: witchcraft for the daytime, vampiric powers for the night, and sword fighting, which overlaps both.
Mateusz explained that some abilities are locked behind specific vampiric blood. If you drain another vampire, you can steal their unique mutation or power.
Game Length and Multiple Endings
Currently, the development team reports that completing the game takes anywhere from 55 to 70 hours. The game features a variety of different endings based on your decisions. Konrad Tomaszkiewicz also teased that The Blood of Dawnwalker is not the endpoint but an origin story, hinting at a planned overarching narrative throughout the ages.
