Bad News for Rematch: Core Features Like Crossplay and Player Reporting Are Still Months Away

Expected Rematch Features Delayed Yet Again: Crossplay and Reporting Still 6-9 Weeks Out

After four years in development, Rematch launched last month to a rocky start, plagued by connection issues, matchmaking problems, and a general lack of stability. While the development team has rolled out daily hotfixes to address some of the immediate fires, players’ patience is wearing thin over the absence of many fundamental features.

No Crossplay or Reporting Before September

According to a recent developer announcement, core features that are considered standard in any modern multiplayer game—such as crossplay and a player reporting system—are still 6-9 weeks away, likely arriving in September. It was stated that the team is trying to get these features ready for the game’s Season 1 launch.

The current lack of a player reporting system makes it impossible to penalize toxic behavior. While the developers acknowledge this shortcoming, they confirmed the system will only be implemented alongside crossplay.

The Competitive Ranking System Remains Controversial

The game’s ranking system operates on the Openskill algorithm, which focuses on balancing the average skill level of teams. However, this often results in significant skill disparities between individual players on the same team, leading to a “carrier” problem. Players are complaining that even if matches appear balanced on paper, they are often saddled with much less-skilled teammates.

Furthermore, the inability to de-rank from one league to another (e.g., from Gold down to Silver) dampens the competitive spirit. The development team has noted they are planning to address this as well.

Limited Improvements for Gamepad and M&KB Players

The upcoming patch was announced to contain only minor fixes. This patch will include:

  • Gamepad remapping options,
  • Accessibility options for colorblindness,
  • A handful of bug fixes.

These are relatively minor updates, and crucial needs for keyboard and mouse players, such as aim sensitivity settings, haven’t even made it into this next patch.

Competitive 3v3 and 4v4 Modes on Hold

A clear timeline was not provided for the highly requested competitive 3v3 and 4v4 modes. The developers expressed concern that introducing these modes could “split the player base.” Therefore, the current plan is to add only one new competitive mode for the time being.

Server and Latency Issues

The developers also acknowledged significant problems with the server infrastructure. High latency (ping) is a recurring complaint, especially in regions like South America and the Middle East. The team announced they will attempt to resolve this with routing optimizations and by deploying new servers in the affected regions.

Conclusion: A Launch Riddled with Shortcomings

The Rematch development team insists they are passionate about the project and are frequent players themselves. However, these messages of sincerity do little to compensate for the game’s glaring omissions. For a game that has been out for over a month to still lack crossplay, reporting, varied competitive modes, and proper balancing, a release under an “Early Access” tag might have spared it from such intense criticism.

The game has potential, but the developers shouldn’t test the patience of their players any further if they hope to realize it.
