IO Interactive, the developer behind the acclaimed Hitman series, has unveiled the first extensive gameplay footage and a wealth of new details for its long-awaited James Bond game, 007 First Light, during a State of Play presentation. The game, which will tell a completely original origin story for the iconic spy, is set to launch on March 27, 2026.
Gameplay Mechanics: Forge Your Own Bond
Developed on IO Interactive’s proprietary Glacier Engine, the game gives players the freedom to approach objectives in their own way. Whether you prefer to slip in unnoticed, go in guns blazing, or improvise with a mix of both, the choice is yours. The gameplay is built on four core pillars:
- Spycraft: Your toolkit for the quieter side of the job. You can eavesdrop on conversations for intelligence, lift a keycard from a distracted guard’s pocket, or piece together clues from environmental details.
- Instinct: A limited resource reflecting Bond’s quick thinking and adaptability. It refills as you complete objectives and allows you to lure guards, bluff your way past suspicious individuals, or slow down time for the perfect shot.
- Q-Branch Gadgets: Essential tools for any mission. Hack a camera system, cut through a locked door with a laser, or distract a guard to slip by unnoticed.
- Combat: A fluid blend of precision gunplay and brutal melee combat. You can throw enemies over railings, use nearby objects as weapons, and disarm foes in a single smooth motion. When things get lethal, Bond’s “Licence to Kill” activates, allowing him to use his expert marksmanship.
The gameplay deep dive showcased a variety of missions, from a tense chess tournament in Slovakia to a lavish gala in London, highlighting iconic Bond moments including high-speed car chases.
Meet the New James Bond: Patrick Gibson
One of the biggest reveals of the night was the cast. The role of the young James Bond will be played by actor Patrick Gibson. He’ll be joined by a talented ensemble cast:
- Lennie James as Greenway (Bond’s mentor)
- Priyanga Burford as M
- Alastair Mackenzie as Q
- Kiera Lester as Moneypenny
- Noémie Nakai as Ms. Roth
